Every summer, we celebrate two holidays that changed the course of American history.
July 4th marks the birth of a nation founded on the promise of freedom. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom wasn’t experienced equally—and that for many Black Americans, it arrived years later than it should have.
Different moments. Different stories.
But together, they remind us of one important truth:
Freedom creates the opportunity for ownership.
And ownership has always needed protection.
Most people think of insurance as something you buy because something might go wrong. But historically, insurance has always been about something much bigger. It was created to help people recover from loss, protect what they built, and keep moving forward. Whether it was merchants sharing the risk of transporting goods across the ocean or communities rebuilding after devastating fires, insurance has always been tied to one thing—preserving opportunity.
That became especially important after emancipation.
As Black Americans began building businesses, purchasing property, and creating generational wealth, access to financial services—including insurance—was often limited. So, Black entrepreneurs did what we’ve always done: they built our own. Historic companies like North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and Supreme Life Insurance Company weren’t just selling policies. They were creating jobs, building wealth, strengthening communities, and proving that insurance could be a tool for economic empowerment—not just financial protection.
That’s a part of insurance history that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Today, insurance is still quietly standing behind the American dream. It’s there when a business owner rebuilds after a fire, when a family recovers from a storm, or when an entrepreneur gets a second chance after an unexpected setback. It doesn’t create success—but it helps protect it.
As we reflect on both Juneteenth and Independence Day, let’s remember that freedom isn’t just about where we’ve been. It’s about what we’re building today.
Businesses. Homes. Investments. Legacies.
Those who came before us fought for the opportunity to own. It’s on us to make sure what we build lasts.
At Ako Brokerage Services, that’s how we’ve always viewed insurance. It’s not just about claims or policies. It’s about protecting dreams, preserving wealth, and making sure the next generation has something to build on.
Because real freedom isn’t just the ability to build.
It’s the ability to keep what you’ve built.
